Over, Under, or Alone: Wearing a Henley Three Ways
Over, Under, or Alone: Wearing a Henley Three Ways
STYLING
One shirt, three jobs: a first layer, a middle layer, and the whole outfit.
A henley is one of the few shirts that works in three positions in an outfit. It can be the only thing you are wearing above the waist, it can sit under something, and a long-sleeve one can sit over a tee. Each position asks for a different placket setting and a different sleeve, and getting the pairing right is most of what styling a henley comes down to.
Alone
Worn on its own, a henley has to carry the outfit, and the placket is the only detail doing it. Leave the top one or two buttons open so there is a line at the neck, and keep the rest done up so the strip stays flat. A short sleeve alone wants pants with some structure, like chinos or straight denim, so the softness of the knit has something to sit against. A long sleeve alone reads more finished and can handle a plainer bottom half.
Under
Under an open overshirt, a chore jacket, or an unlined blazer, the henley becomes the thing the eye lands on between the lapels or the open front. This is where the placket earns its keep: it gives the layer on top a line to frame, with none of the bulk of a collar. Button it higher than you would alone, since the outer layer is already providing the open line, and choose a color that sits quieter than the layer on top, so the two do not compete.
Over
A long-sleeve henley over a plain crew-neck tee is the one most people forget. Leave the placket fully open so the band of the tee shows at the neck, and let the tee hem show below the henley hem by an inch or so if the two lengths allow it. The tee should be lighter in weight and lighter in color than the henley. This is the setting for a cold morning that will warm up, because the henley comes off and the outfit still works.
Sleeves Decide the Season
Short sleeves live in the alone and under positions and stay there. Long sleeves can do all three, and pushing the sleeves up moves a long-sleeve henley halfway toward a short one without changing shirts. That is why a long sleeve is the more useful of the two to own first if you are starting from nothing.
One Rule for All Three
Whatever position the henley is in, the placket should be doing one job: fully open, mostly closed, or closed with the top undone. A placket with buttons done up at random reads as unfinished in every position. Decide the setting before you leave the house and leave it there.
The short-sleeve and long-sleeve henleys we stock are both cut to layer this way, and the About Us page explains how the two share a size.
Thank you for shopping with us, and for keeping a good henley within reach.
